After putting it to a community vote, we’re pleased to announce that we’ve put Audioboo forward to represent us at The Mobile Premier Awards in Barcelona during Mobile World Congress. It’s not a given yet that they’ll get to present. The jury needs to whittle down the long list of 48 to a shortlist of 20 who will get to present on the day and have a chance to win the award. We wish Audioboo the best of luck.
It’s also good to see that our friends in Mobile Monday Belfast and Mobile Monday Edinburgh have also put nominees forward so there’ll be a good contingent from the UK.

The Mobile Premier Awards online
Hello folks --
I'm afraid we've had a bit of a snafu with our selection of a nominee for the Mobile Premier Awards in Barcelona on Feb 15 (http://www.mobilepremierawards.com/). The deadline for submission of the nominee for the Mobile Monday category has taken us a bit by surprise -- It's our fault, we weren’t paying close enough attention to the emails we got from the MPA team.
In any case, we (Jo, Dan, Helen & Alex) have gone through the companies that nominated themselves and come up with a short list of nominees. We need to pick one of them to put forward to the final in Barcelona on Monday 15th February during Mobile World Congress. Dan has put these into a simple Yahoo! poll, which will be open for voting until end-of-day (midnight, UK time) today (Thursday the 14th January).
The poll is here: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/momolondon/surveys?id=2264209
Our nominees are:
Audioboo - http://www.dotopen.com/organizations/view/audioboo http://twitter.com/audioboo http://audioboo.fm
Little World Gifts - http://www.dotopen.com/organizations/view/little-world-gifts http://twitter.com/lwgifts http://littleworldgifts.com
Flook by Ambient Industries - http://www.dotopen.com/organizations/view/flook http://twitter.com/ambientwit http://flook.it
Zkatter - http://www.dotopen.com/organizations/view/zkatter-ltd http://twitter.com/zkatter http://zkatter.com
Apologies if the voting URL gets corrupted or you can’t read it for some reason - if it does, just login into the yahoo group, visit "Polls" on the left-hand navigation bar and vote from there. Good luck to the nominees and let the voting begin!
You must be an existing registered member of our Yahoo! Group to vote and we will not be processing any new memberships until after the voting has closed tonight.
If you have any questions on this please contact Dan Appelquist. He’s in charge of this one!
Get voting folks!!
You might be familiar with the Global Peer Awards that Rudy de Waele has been running in partnership with Mobile Monday for the last few years in Barcelona. Well, he’s now extended the concept to include more networks, including the Women in Mobile Data Association (see us on Facebook and LinkedIn) and has launched The Mobile Premier Awards 2010 and it is now open for entries.
The Mobile Premier Awards recognize the year’s best in Mobile Start-up Innovation and are the largest open, global start-up competition in the mobile industry. The awards are the point of reference in start-up premiers during the Mobile World Congress on February 15, 2010 in Barcelona (yes, it’s nearly that time of year again) and are organized in collaboration with some of the main networks in the mobile industry.
We’re particularly excited about the award for female entrepreneurship… Anyway, more details about the whole shebang here. It’s free to enter and it seems to me to be exciting to be involved in it with both my Mobile Monday London hat and my Women in Mobile Data Association hat on. (Good job I like wearing hats eh).
The Mobile Premier Awards 2010 will include the following awards:
* MPA in Innovation - The best grassroots start-up innovation chosen by their peers in partnership with Mobile Monday. The Mobile Monday chapters will vote for their local most innovative start-up. An international jury of the most recognized mobile industry experts will select the 20 finalists from all the local chapter nominees to pitch at the event in Barcelona in front of investors, operators, media companies, peer entrepreneurs, and press and influential bloggers.
* MPA in Marketing - The best start-up in Mobile Marketing
* MPA in Entertainment - The best start-up in Mobile Entertainment in partnership with the Mobile Entertainment Forum
* MPA in User Experience - The best start-up in Mobile User Experience in partnership with MEX.
* MPA in Social Change - The best start-up using mobile for social change in partnership with Mobile Active.org
* MPA in Female Entrepreneurship - The best woman-led mobile start-up in partnership with Women2.0 and the Women in Mobile Data Association
Participation to these awards is free and open to any start-up with a mobile angle. Go to www.mobilepremierawards.com and take your chance to walk the red carpet in Barcelona!

Graham from Learning Without Frontiers has been in touch to tell us about the conference he’s organising – The Handheld Learning Conference 2009. It’s in its fifth year (so nearly as old as Mobile Monday London then!) and features a wide variety of speakers (including some famous names) and 1500 or so delegates and will be held at The Brewery at The Barbican from Oct 5 – 7. More details on the conference and speakers later on in this post.
Anyway, there’s a couple of reasons Graham has been in touch. The first is obviously to promote the event (which looks rather good I have to say) and offer Mobile Monday London members a 15% discount off the list price – the early bird price is just £375 (valid until 25th September) and the late booking price is £425. So 15% off those prices is not to be sniffed at. To take advantage of the discount, please use code momohhl09 on the registration page.
Not only that, there’s a free element to the event. Yes, we all like free! The first day of the event, Monday 5th October, is open to the general public and is free to enter. So that means anyone with a passing interest in mobile learning related stuff will get a chance to sample the exhibition and some free seminars as well. And not only that, there’s going to be a party and awards ceremony that night, hosted by The Gadget Show’s very own Jason Bradbury, which us MoMoLo’ers are all invited to to hang out at, especially it being a Monday evening ‘n all. Turn up from 7pm and the jollity will be going on until 10.30pm. I imagine there’ll be a few familiar faces there, mine included!
So here’s a little bit more about the conference lifted from their website to give you a flavour of what’s on offer…
The Handheld Learning Conference is the world’s leading event about learning using mobile and inexpensive access technologies, attended by more than 1,500 international delegates.
Lead speakers for 2009 include:
With many others soon to be announced.
Now in its fifth year the event has become the largest of it’s kind; bringing together thought leaders, innovators, practitioners, developers, policy and decision makers from the education, technology and entertainment sectors.
Over 3 stimulating days this group will demonstrate, debate and explore how mobile technologies such as phones, entertainment devices, GPS locators, and netbooks can be deployed to enable transformational improvements in learning across schools, home, further education, training and business.
This year’s theme is "Creativity, Innovation, Inclusion & Transformation" recognising that 2009 is the European year of creativity and innovation, and the value these elements have to learning, whilst identifying that real transformation will only occur following universal inclusion e.g. Home Access.
As always the conference will stage an excellent mix of inspirational talks from leading thinkers and practitioners, lively interactive debates, learners and practitioner showcases, special interest breakouts, networking and social sessions, plus an exhibition featuring the principle industry leaders.

Mobile Monday London is proud to be a media partner for this year’s Meffys. I’m also pleased to announce that yours truly, Helen Keegan, will be on the judging panel for the Mobile Advertising Award. Something I’m actually rather excited about.
Anyway, the key point is that the entry deadline for the awards has been extended to the 24th April so you still have another week to get your entry in. The official blurb and details are below for you all. It’s £300 per entry – unfortunately we don’t qualify as a supporting organisation as we’re a media partner only this time. Anyway, don’t let that put you off entering, it’s still worthwhile and I do know that previous MoMoLo members who have entered the awards in previous years have benefitted, so please do consider it. There are a wide range of categories to choose from and think carefully about which ones to enter. I’ve judged other things before and am frustrated when something is submitted into the wrong category and fails when had it been submitted to a more appropriate category, it would have stood a chance of winning. So think on!
