Mobile Entertainment music conference, July 9th

Mobile Entertainment are announcing a special music conference being organised by the trade mag and website Mobile Entertainment next month.

Mobile Music Now takes place on Thursday July 9th at BAFTA.

We conceived this event to be more about networking and fun than most conferences. Therefore, delegate places include a three course dinner, the chance to speak one-on-one with our guest speakers and panellists, take home industry research and late night drinking.

Places should cost £259 plus VAT, but MoMo members pay £199.

The event starts at 4.30pm with three short keynotes and a panel session. Then follows speed networking, dinner and drinks.

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to thank everyone who helped, sponsored, attended or demo'd at last night's Mobile Monday London event. Even though I say it myself, it was a great success. The three room format seemed to work particularly well for a demo session. We also had some lovely feedback on the night which means a lot to us.

But there are some specific thank yous I need to mention to you all...

Announcing the demo night line-up

Well, it's almost time for Mobile Monday London's demo night and we have now finalised the list of folks who want to show us their wares.

Just to remind you of the logistics first... Our lovely sponsors this month are IPC Media (whose fantastic offices we'll be seeing on the night) and Samsung Mobile Innovator (who will be making a special announcement on Monday evening). Doors will open at 6pm for a *prompt* and we mean *prompt* start at 6.30pm as we have a LOT to get through and I didn't want anyone to miss out. The demos should be done by 8.30pm and we'll have drinks and networking then and if it's a lovely evening, we'll be out on the stunning roof terrace. You'll find IPC Media's offices at The Blue Fin Building, 110 Southwark Street up on the 10th floor (nearest tubes Waterloo, Southwark, London Bridge).

Please allow enough time to get through security on the ground floor and
take the lift up to the 10th floor where we'll be holding the event. Also please
make sure you are registered well in advance so we can whizz you through security. We cannot guarantee you entry unless you are registered.

We have capacity for 155 across three rooms and we'll be rotating the demo teams across all three rooms so that you'll get chance to see everything. You won't miss out by not being in a particular room.

Each demo company will have 3 minutes to pitch their wares, and not just show what their product does but also share at least one insight. At the end of each section, there'll be chance for questions from the audience. This process will be repeated three times with the three groups of demo companies. The products and services you'll see on the night are:

Demo Night - June 15th at IPC Media

This Monday sees the return of Demo Night to Mobile Monday London. We are delighted to announce IPC Media are the sponsors and venue hosts for the evening. The format is going to be a little different than usual as we wont all be sharing the same space, we will have a number of rooms where the demoers will rotate around ... will we confirm all of this later in the week.

As always, doors open at 6pm with a 6:30pm start. We are currently finalising the list of demos for the lineup, huge thanks to everyone for putting themselves forward for this event.

Registration is now open at www.momolo.org ... if you haven't already registered on the new site, you will need to do so first and then click on the register button on the event. If you have already signed up, login and click on the register button. If you are unable to attend the event, please go back to the site and unregister yourself and places will be made available for other people.

Yes, it's not long to go now to get your entry in for the Vodafone Mobile Clicks Competition. There's just about a week to go so there's still time. We've tried to keep the application process simple and you can even be pre-start-up and just have a great idea to apply.

We also wanted to reassure you over who owns the IP and any confidentiality concerns so to make things clear...

Confidentiality is secured. All people involved are informed and committed to this confidentiality.
The rights of the idea will be with the owner/submitter.
With your entry, we don't need every single detail - just enough detail to give us a clear picture of the WHAT and the HOW of the mobile service.
We respect the situations in which the start-ups do not have a patent yet. See our very very strict confidentiality claims. Above and in the Ts & Cs.
Ideas will NOT be shared with competitors or other companies. Only the jury and the organizing team(s) involved will have ALL the registration data (UK and NL). The Press and Other Startups in this contest will ONLY have RESTRICTED access to only a few Registration Fields (e.g. Name, Contact Details, Short Description of Service).

The Mobile Phone Security Challenge

Today sees the launch of a national search for designers to develop new ways of securing mobile phones against thieves and fraudsters, as research shows that 80% of phones contain data which can be used by criminals to access bank accounts, steal identity, or sell on personal data.

The Mobile Phone Security Challenge is offering a total of £400,000 to designers and technology experts to come up with new ways of securing handsets, the data they contain, and their future use as electronic ‘wallets’ when m-commerce technology is introduced in the UK.

The Challenge is part of Design out Crime, an initiative from the Home Office Design & Technology Alliance Against Crime and the Design Council. The Mobile Phone Security Challenge is supported by the Technology Strategy Board.

Applicants will submit a tender outlining how they will approach the challenge and identifying any relevant experience they may have. Once selected by a panel of experts, the teams will be allocated money for research and development from the £400,000 fund, and spend six months developing designs and working prototypes in one or more of three key areas:

· Making mobile phone handsets harder or less desirable to steal

· Making the data stored on mobile phones harder or less desirable to steal

· Making future m-commerce transactions secure and fraud proof

They will produce market-ready applications which may include hardware and software for handsets, new services and other innovations, which will be showcased and promoted by early 2010, with a view to their widespread and rapid take-up by the market.

A recent survey found that 80% of people carry information on their mobile phone handsets that could be used by criminals to commit fraud - and 16% keep their bank details saved on their phone, yet only 4 in 10 people currently lock their mobiles using a PIN. Such data includes website passwords, bookmarks, emails, personal security data and locations/addresses on map applications.

The deadline for applications is Friday 22^nd May. Short-listed applicants will present to the expert panel on Friday 27^th June, and the four finalists will be announced on Monday 29^th June. The teams will develop prototypes over six months involving a process of review and advice from the expert panel. Four prototypes will be showcased in early 2010. Sebastian Conran, chair of the Design & Technology Alliance Against Crime said: “This challenge is the result of work undertaken last year when we engaged young victims of crime, police, mobile industry experts and designers to understand current and future issues regarding mobile phone crime. The Alliance has prioritised five areas and is working hard to deliver insights that the UK’s design and technology sector can use to deliver innovative solutions to reduce the instances of crime and antisocial behaviour. This is one of the early results of our work – there’s more to come.”

Previous advances in technology have led to unexpected new forms of crime; email heralded the phenomenon of ‘phishing’, ATMs precipitated the new crime of ‘card catching’ and online banking gave rise to ‘key logging’, used by fraudsters to track the input of secret passwords and account numbers. However, there are also many examples of technology being applied successfully to reduce crime – for example, British Crime Survey figures show theft of vehicles has reduced by 51% since 1997 as a result of improved security being designed into the vehicle, and an evaluation of houses built to the ACPO Secured By Design (SBD) standards showed that these experience 26% less crime than non SBD houses, and residents fear of crime is lower.

The Mobile Phone Security Challenge will be steered by a group of leading specialists:

· Steve Babbage, Security Technologies Manager & Group Chief Cryptographer, Vodafone Group R&D

· Mark Delaney, Director, Connect Design, Nokia

· Josh Dhaliwal, Co-founder, Mobile Youth

· Richard Martin, Business Security Consultant, APACS

· Joe McGeehan, Managing Director, Toshiba Research Lab and Professor of Communications and Engineering at the University of Bristol

· Dr Walter Tuttlebee, Executive Director, Mobile VCE

So that’s not bad then, a prize fund of £400k and will be supported to get to prototype and production stage. If this is your area of expertise, then I’d say it could be worth a shot.

Speaker and session updates for Monday’s event ‘Financing your business in a credit crunch’

Just a quick reminder for you to register for Monday evening's event at the CBI/Centrepoint. Yes, we're back at the CBI but there will be sandwiches to accompany our beers and wine courtesy of the lovely folks at DCKTN.

The evening is a slightly different format than usual so I just wanted to explain it a little bit more here.

We'll open with short presentations from DCKTN and Numeritas and we'll get pitches from Vodafone Mobile Clicks (about the competition and the 150k Euro prize fund) and Pembridge Partners LLP (about the Gateway to Investment programme).

We'll then move on to a panel session. Our line-up is looking good:
Benjamin Ellis, Redcatco is our chair for the evening and a seasoned entrepreneur himself. He's also very charming and will do his utmost to get the best out of our panellists.

And our panellists are:
Pamir Gelenbe, a partner with Newton More Venture Capital and Private Equity and co-founder of mobile marketing company, Flytxt. Pamir knows where the money is and where it’s going, and maybe even how to get it. He might just be worth listening to.
Carl Uminski, co-founder IMW. Carl's been there and done that as an entrepreneur with Overture/Yahoo/AOL and more recently with Trutap. Carl is battle-worn but is fighting the good fight again with a new start-up.
Rose Lewis, Pembridge Partners LLP knows a thing or two about mergers and acquisitions, particularly with media and digital businesses. She also knows how to get your company investment ready so will have a few top tips worth keeping an ear open for.
Chris Padfield who is Investment Manager for London Business Angels & London Seed Capital and can explain to us how London Seed Capital works and what's happening in the angel sector at the moment.

There will also be some other experts in the room from Kemp Little LLP (our lovely legal sponsors), and with a bit of luck, someone from cmypitch.com amongst others. And I know there will be some investors in the room as well as scouts for investors. As well as our usual mix of interesting mobile folks.

Following our panel sessions, we will be having surgery sessions alongside the networking and drinks. This is your chance to have a one to one chat with one of our experts without jostling to get their attention over a glass of wine. Tables and chairs will be laid out for the various surgeries in and around the reception area. Helpers will be on hand (I hope!) to take down details of who wants to chat and give you a time slot if there's a queue. And for those who weren't able to have their one to one or small group session there and then, the various doctors will be able to get hold of you afterwards to chat anyway. We will be having the following surgery sessions:

Vodafone Mobile Clicks - explaining more about the competition and how it worked last year
Pembridge Partners/Gateway to Investment - Rose can explain in more detail how the G2i programme works, what's involved and share some case histories with you to see if you're eligible to apply (I'm told the programme is *fantastic* from more than one trusted source). She can also have a chat to you about Pembridge's work on the M&A and strategic partnering front too.
London Seed Capital - Chris will be on hand to explain what LSC is all about, how it works and how you can get in on the act.
DCKTN - Eddie and Philip are on hand to discuss the various initiatives going on with them and how you can get in on the act to benefit from the options on offer.
Numeritas - Denver is available to talk through how their financial modelling works and discuss its relevance for your business if you're thinking of going for finance and investment. If finance isn't your strong suit, and it isn't mine, then Denver might just be able to help you.

Meffys Awards entry deadline extended to 24th April due to popular demand

Mobile Monday London is proud to be a media partner for this year’s Meffys. I’m also pleased to announce that yours truly, Helen Keegan, will be on the judging panel for the Mobile Advertising Award. Something I’m actually rather excited about.

Anyway, the key point is that the entry deadline for the awards has been extended to the 24th April so you still have another week to get your entry in. The official blurb and details are below for you all. It’s £300 per entry – unfortunately we don’t qualify as a supporting organisation as we’re a media partner only this time. Anyway, don’t let that put you off entering, it’s still worthwhile and I do know that previous MoMoLo members who have entered the awards in previous years have benefitted, so please do consider it. There are a wide range of categories to choose from and think carefully about which ones to enter. I’ve judged other things before and am frustrated when something is submitted into the wrong category and fails when had it been submitted to a more appropriate category, it would have stood a chance of winning. So think on!

New event 20 April 2009: How to Finance your Business in a Credit Crunch

The Digital Communications Knowledge Transfer Network in association with Mobile Monday London presents 'How to finance your business in a credit crunch'. Doors open at 6pm for a 6.30pm start on Monday 20th April. There will be short presentations and a panel session representing all aspects of the financial value chain from VC through Angel Investor to Entrepreneurs and more. We also have a few surprises up our sleeve to stimulate the debate.

We’re in a credit crunch but that doesn't mean that you can't still be successful in these challenging times. This is your chance to get your finance questions answered. We aim to answer questions relevant to businesses at all stages in their growth, from start-up to grown-up. This is your chance to find out:

Vodafone Mobile Clicks Competition now open to the UK with a prize fund of €150, 000

Vodafone UK and Mobile Monday London today announce Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2009, a competition to inspire start-up businesses and individual developers to create and deliver a new mobile site or service – all creative ideas are welcome.

Mobile Clicks 2009 is run jointly with Vodafone Netherlands. Anyone wishing to enter can visit http://www.vodafonemobileclicks.com/. The final will be held in Amsterdam in September and will feature three finalists from each country. The first three winners will be awarded a total sum of €150,000.

Last years’ Mobile Clicks’ winners included Nulaz, a location-based social networking service merging Google Maps and Facebook to allow people to see where their friends are, share locations and view local information, Tipspot a new online city guide service and Map the Gap, an idea-sharing application for mobile phones.

The competition consists of three selection rounds, running from April to September 2009. The panel of judges will include mobile internet experts from Vodafone as well as other industry leaders. The winner will be announced in Amsterdam in September this year.

The rules are pretty simple:

Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2009 is open to any individual residing in the Netherlands or the UK from the age of 18 years and to Dutch and UK-based start-up companies, businesses, institutions and all other organisations.
Participants must be or must have the intention to become a start-up enterprise/business in the field of mobile internet products or services. Start-up means that the enterprise/business cannot be older than three years since its inception.
Each participant may submit only one entry.
(Previous Dutch) Entries from Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2008 are allowed to participate again in Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2009

Registration for this contest is now open. Registration for the Netherlands will close at April 30th, 2009 and registration for the UK will close on May 14th, 2009.

OpenMIC Mobile Innovation Event 2nd April 09 in Bath

The lovely folks at DCKTN and OpenMIC have reminded me this morning about their upcoming event in Bath - It's a barcamp style unconference for discussion, debate and developing new mobile applications and mobile web services. Our very own Dan Appelquist is one of the featured speakers, although anyone gets a chance to host or lead a session just by putting their name and idea forward. That's how a barcamp works for those of you who've never done one before.

openMIC Mobile Innovation Camp explores recent platform developments and arms the attendee with the knowledge and skills to execute ideas for mobile apps (Symbian, iPhone, Android) and take them to market. The attendee will also learn how to create mobile web applications that utilise the new openness of the operator. In the afternoon attendees will join teams to develop application ideas into a tactical plan with possible investment to develop it further as an outcome.

Preparing for the event: openMIC attendees are encouraged to come to the event with an idea for a mobile application in mind. Ideas can be commercial or to instigate social or charitable purposes. Before the event attendees should suggest application and service ideas using the openMIC page at http://openmicamp.ning.com/ All ideas suggested are open and owned by the break out group that mobilizes to develop them.

Who are they and what do they want in their mobile future? What kind of businesses will succeed in this new climate? What services, devices and infrastructure are needed to create this future? Rescheduled - February 10th event - The changing landscape of the mobile web

MoMoLondon is back for 2009 on Feb 10th with 'The changing landscape of the mobile web'. Much has happened in the last 12 months in this space. New handsets, Operating Systems, browsing environments and industry initiatives are arriving. So it is time to review the mobile web again, take a fresh look at things like widegets, webOS, and the tools available to see how this is going to affect us all.

Mobile Monday London & Swedish Beers birthday round-up

Yes, I know it's been a while coming but it's been kinda busy at technokitten towers lately so I haven't manage to catch up on everything yet but I thought it was about time to tell you about our Mobile Monday and Swedish Beers birthday party.

If you weren't there, you missed a treat. Tim Green, editor of Mobile Entertainment Magazine did a wonderful job in the role of Parky to host our chat show stylee event with guests Dr Mike Short (VP R&D O2 Telefonica), Russell Buckley (MD Europe Admob and Chairman of the Mobile Marketing Association), Madhuban Kumar (Founder, Ereni Partners) and the infamous Bill Thompson from the BBC's digital planet amongst other things. And the mid-way entertainment was provided by the wonderful guys at MIReview. More on that later.

As I was busy organising everything I was in and out of the room so didn't hear the whole thing but since the rooms was packed there were plenty people who did and some of them even wrote about it including Tom Hume, Russell and James Cameron.

And the MIReview guys were fab. They recorded their weekly show live (the first time they've done this) and also did some vox pops at Swedish Beers afterwards. The Swedish Beers party afterwards at Bar 101 was a blast as usual and special thanks has to go to Future of Mobile and MX Telecom for their generosity and support in sponsoring the evening. Mobile Social Software - Platforms and People - December 8th

With the popularity of online social networks, with the rise of mobile access to these networks along with purely mobile social platforms what does all this mean to the users, what aspects will they really uptake and use and how succesful are these platforms likely to be? Monday's event is going to be made up of 2 panels, one representing the industry and one representing the people. We will do another post confirming the lineup before the end of this week.

Swedish Beers & MoMo London Birthday Celebrations

Yes, it's true. Both Swedish Beers and Mobile Monday London have their birthdays round about now - 7 years and 3 years respectively. And to celebrate, we're joining forces and having a big bash combining the best of both events in one big night out on Monday 10th November.

So the format's going to be a little bit different, but we hope you will still enjoy it immensely. So what's in store then...?

The Mobile Monday bit:

Well we have Tim Green, editor of Mobile Entertainment Magazine who is going to be our host with the most on the evening. And he's going to be interviewing four mobile industry celebrities for our delectation, talking about the year just gone and the year ahead and the odd anecdote or three in a chat show stylee. Our esteemed guests are Dr Mike Short from O2, Russell Buckley from Admob, Bill Thompson, a regular from the BBC's Digital Planet plus a mystery guest. There will be time for questions from the audience too.

We will have the MIReview Show joining us too and in the spirit of the evening, they will be presenting and filming some of their show LIVE on stage. (If you don't know them already, think Top Gear but about mobile technology instead of cars.). And we're still hopeful for a surprise or two.

This will all be happening at the CBI at Centrepoint (Tottenham Court Road tube) - Doors opening at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. Don't be late, otherwise you'll miss the Mobile Monday Chat Show as it will only be on for about an hour to an hour and half.

The Swedish Beers bit

Then once the show's a wrap as they say in TV land, we'll move on straight away to Bar 101 (it's underneath Centrepoint at the back) to join the Swedish Beers crew and enjoy some free beer, random chat and general good cheer courtesy of our very generous sponsors - The Future of Mobile and MX Telecom.

There's no formality at Swedish Beers, just turn up, be friendly, drink beer (or soft drinks), chew the fat, talk about mobile stuff (or not) and generally enjoy the vibe.
